The Only way is Essex Boys : Retribution

by
#TOWIEBR......Doesn't have the same ring to it does it? But that is the way I felt after watching the recent Paul Tanter film "Essex Boys: Retribution". This is a film that gives a new dynamic and twist to the 1995 Range Rover Murders. A Fictional Tale set 18 years after the infamous true events that rocked Essex.

So Here is a quick synopsis and rundown of the film.
"Almost 20 years after the Essex Boys murders, a New Generation of drug dealers are hitting the club scene in Essex. But soon revenge and control of the territory raises it's ugly head"

So this film is a sequel (of sorts) to Paul Tanters "The Fall of the Essex Boys (2013)" and picks up 18 years later with a fictional story to add mystery to the already complicated story of the true events. Paul takes on the writing duties as well as directing with this film and it brings a more dynamic, slick and darkly comedic turn as opposed to the very serious, down the line tone it's predecessor took. Although this film is a sequel, it can easily be a stand alone film as the narrative and structure of the story tells you more than enough background to get you up and running with this film.
Billy Murray (The Bill, White Collar Hooligan) returns and offers a great narration to help move the story along and gives you all the information you need to never feel lost. Billy Murray is a Class actor and true "Essex Boys" Veteran. The Film focuses on four essex drug dealers new on the Essex club scene. Great Performances from Ian Virgo (Black Hawk Down), Ryan Winsley (Piggy), Alex Esmail (Attack the Block) and Kyle Summercorn (Adulthood). All four young actors worked extremely well together with a tight script and snappy dialogue to make it work. Special mention goes to Ryan Winsley whose character of Neil was brilliant and had some of the best lines throughout, usually involving the C-word.

The four boys have to try and keep a very eager copper at bay who has some sort of vendetta against them. Kye Loren (He Who Dares) is the copper who will not stop until he gets these little shits and he will do anything to catch them out.
With some great appearances from Lorraine Stanley (London to Brighton, Eden Lake) who only has to glare at you to frighten you, Vas Blackwood (Lock Stock..,Mean Machine) pops up and automatically oozes coolness and Paul Marlon who appears with his menacing stare and blonde hair.

The Film is a triumph of entertainment. The script zips with great one liners and great banter between the four drug dealers. The Tonal shift is more darkly comedic, which helps bring the best out of the characters and the way they do their business. The Directing of Paul Tanter improves with every film he makes.
The Beginning Heist sequence a high point in a well directed, paced and orchestrated moment of the film. The Pig masks were a stroke of genius and Tanter gets to give us his "Point Break" moment and pulls it off in style.

Now I know these types of films are not everyone's cup of tea, and I am not writing this to say you're wrong. You are all entitled to your opinion and to like certain types of film. BUT I sometimes feel Low Budget UK Films get a rough rap before anybody has even seen them. I think more people should support the UK film Industry and help it grow and with that, improve it. If we don't get behind the UK film Industry then we can't help it grow.
So Check out Essex Boys: Retribution and see some of the emerging talent out there that you may of missed amongst the blockbusters in the cinema.

I am a massive fan of supporting UK film and UK Talent. Paul Tanter has become one of my favorite filmmakers as I have seen his craft improve and grow in the last year and I don't see it stopping any time soon.
The Future of UK Film looks ever so bright and if you don't get involved now then you will have a lot of catching up to do when it gets big.

Check out the Trailer PODcast we did before seeing the film:

ESSEX BOYS: RETRIBUTION Trailer (Podcast special)

by
Paul Tanter is a BUSY man! One of the ODDcast PODcast's Favorite Writer/Director/Producer/Human Being/Probably Chess Champion has done a follow up to his take on the "Essex Boys" Mythos. A While back Paul wrote and directed "The Fall of The Essex Boys" which was a different take to the already well known "Range Rover Murders" from way back in the 90's!

NOW, He has followed that up with a fictionlised story of what happened 18 years on. With Paul Tanter on writing and directing duties and Simon Phillips in the producers chair, the two looked to have delivered another dimension to the world created from the most notorious gangland killings in recent times.

Phillips said "After the success of The Fall of the Essex boys, which has sold 90,000 units to date, we've continued the story and I am pleased that Paul has delivered an even more exciting, darkly funny and sharper film. I'm very excited that Metrodome have scheduled a Christmas release. The interest in this story means Essex Boys Retribution is THE crime drama to be getting this December."

So Myself and Billy sat down to watch the trailer and see what we got from it. A trailer which in my opinion does exactly what is needed to gain some anticipation of this Independent British Film.

Watch the Trailer:

We Recorded a Podcast to cover our thoughts on the trailer and what we expect to see from the final product. We also discussed how we, as boys from Essex, remember the "Range Rovers Murders" and the amount of connections it seemed to have in a small community.

The film stars Ian Virgo (Rise of the Footsoldier), Alex Ismail (Attack the Block), Ryan Winsley (The Fall of the Essex Boys), and Kyle Summercorn (Turnout) with Lorraine Stanley (London to Brighton), Vas Blackwood (Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels) and Billy Murray (The Rise and Fall of a White Collar Hooligan) all supporting.

Ambition to Live - Short Film Fights for your Attention

by
So, over here on this blog, and the podcasts, I have been recently championing the medium of "Short Film". From chatting to Short Film Creators ( The Dinner Party Podcast ) and even dabbling in the medium myself ( Chess for Idiots ) I have been constantly saying "Short Films" are something we should all be getting behind and championing.
I believe Short Films are a great way for people to get creative and have a platform to showcase their abilities. Whether it be amateur film makers like myself or professional film makers, it's all relevent to being able to put forward a story in a short space of time.

So today I was informed and shown a preview of a Brand New Short film "Ambition to Live".
A young boxer prepares for his greatest challenge yet, as he prepares for war against his toughest opponent ever- himself!

Produced,Written and Starring Jordan Pitt, it's a personal tale that echoes his own beliefs during his time as a boxer.
“I originally wrote Ambition to Live with the hope inspiring people who fight everyday. No matter what it is,we all fight against something. Whether it’s a single mother struggling to raise her child, someone struggling to pay their bills each month, the list goes on.” he says.“Basically it's about the power of the mind, and if we are strong mentally,we can get through anything”.

I watched the film with hardly any information, background knowledge and idea other than seeing the poster, which is pretty cool I must add, and I have to say it impressed me. The Story was about a young boxer Nathan, who is run down by a car and lays motionless as bystanders gather around to watch as paramedics try to save his life, whilst in a seperate sequence the motionless guy is in a boxing gym gearing up for a fight. Both sequences intertwined as metaphors for his inner battle to survive. His ambition to live I suppose.
The short really had a stunning visual style to it that was shot beautifully and brought grittiness to it, especially in the close ups in the boxing scenes. So fair play to Director Fraser Ayres for that. The pace and narrative was well paced with the metaphors and story played out well to really drive home the message the writer had in mind.

The Short has very limited dialogue, almost silent giving the short's music to take hold of you and bring you into the mind of the protagonist. The Dialogue comes across as almost being heard from a distance, or in a dream, and that is effective to show the focus on what Nathan can hear.
The Acting was well done, given such a short amount of screen time, the actors portray their characters very well and serve their purpose. Jordan Pitt as Nathan is silent throughout but really has intensity in his eyes. Rebecca Ferdinando plays it well as the distraught girlfriend who arrives at the scene and John Pickard & Allyson Ava Brown  as the paramedics struggling to keep this guy alive.

A Very well done short that is already gaining credibility and deserved praise on the short film circuit. It is great to see talented, ambitious and enthusiastic people get together to create somebodies vision and I for one will be keeping on eye on the future work of all involved.

On Sunday the 8th of December it is being shown at BAFTA and from Monday the 9th of December you can watch it online on You Tube.

Petra Bryant - Czech her out! (Podcast Special)

by
"Far more than just the Token European"

ODDcast PODcast UK:Ep.117 - The Token European Podcast with Petra Bryant

Petra Bryant: Remember the name because it's a name which you will be hearing more and more in 2014. This Czech born Actress has no less than 6 films due out in 2014 with headlining roles in "The Disappearance of Lenka Wood" amongst them.

Myself and Petra at Podcast Recording

At the beginning of November I had to privilege to meet up with Petra for a podcast chat face to face. We met up on a rainy Saturday morning in a pub in Upminster. We sat down in an empty pub, not surprising on a Saturday morning, got ourselves a drink and sat down to have a relaxing and thoroughly entertaining chat for the podcast.

For the next hour we discussed things such as...
- Moving to Notting Hill and getting Mugged! (seriously not a joke or an Unedited Richard Curtis Movie)
- Starring and working alongside Director's Paul Tanter and Simon Phillips
- Being Teetotal, Gluten Free and a keen Pilates advocate.
- Being a Beauty/Fashion Blogger and loving a bargain.
- Buying her parents Onesies for her parents back in The Czech Republic.
- Having a Mute Cat that wears Jewellery
- Coming up with a Sitcom Idea
- Upminsters worst B&B
and much more Entertaining chat in a special hour long podcast.

I have made a good friend in Petra as after the podcast we sat down for a further hour or so having a general chat about life and stuff that made me realise that this girl will make it far in the business that call show. She comes across as witty, funny, determined, easy going and goofy (and that's a compliment) somebody who doesn't mind laughing at herself and has a constant smile across her extremely pretty face. Petra is a woman who loves her fashion and isn't afraid to dress up for simple occasions such as a podcast. She is fast becoming a lady whose style is making her stand out on Red Carpets and being papped in the street by Photographers.

I had a great time recording this podcast with Petra and really hope you listen to it and enjoy it too. Check out her blog "Girl on a Rocking Horse" if you want to keep up to date with her beauty/fashion blog posts or you can check out her Brand New acting website too.
Give her a follow on Twitter @PetraBryant and Instagram. For more information on her upcoming film projects check out her IMDB page.

Thanks again to Petra for sitting down for the podcast. She is truly a star in the making.

#Mashion & #Meauty No.15: The EMAs Red Carpet Review

by
The Fifteenth (#15) Post in this series of Posts where I challenge myself to try and understand the world of #BBloggers and even #FBloggers.  Click HERE to read the Previous Entries if you haven't.

Here I am again, to spout my nonsensical ramblings in a poorly executed and ill informed post for the, ever decreasingly interesting #Mashion and #Meauty series of posts. I haven't done another one of these posts since the last MTV awards ceremony, and to be honest it's been because I am slowly running out of things to say with #Mashion and #Meauty. Plus I have been busy with my ongoing Podcast work and so forth.

Anyway, you haven't come here for a catch up, you have come here to see what I had to say on some of the fashion on show at the recent MTV event. So I won't leave you hanging on much longer.

Please remember, I am in no way, shape or form a fashion expert. These are purely the mindless ramblings and opinions of a man who once wore silver trousers! (Yes Silver!)

BIG HAIRED LADY: Who is she? I have no idea! But whatever she is wearing it is hideous! Totally Horrible! I can't actually work out the bottom half, it's like one of those pictures that confuse you, like the never ending staircase!

BUDGET RHIANNA: I joke, I actually have warmed to Rita Ora since she started wearing more clothes. She looks quite hot here and can't go wrong flashing a bit of leg can you? Worked for Angelina Jolie, it's gotta work for Ora.

Bridget Mendler: I had to google the name of this lady and am still none the wiser who she is. Whoever she is, she looks extremely uncomfortable and bored. The look into the distance just cries out "Did I leave the oven on?"

SOMETHING POP: This Pop Duo, Icona Pop? Stupid Name! Well they look so mismatched and terrible here. The Ginger one looks like a Drag Queen version of Beetlejuice!!

IGGY POP!: I have heard this chicks songs and find them as annoying and irritating as I find this outfit. Apparently flashing your minge in public is now what you need to do to sell records. Iggy Azalea needs a crash course in having some dignity. No one wants to see that on the Red carpet!.........Pick your moments Iggy!.

RON BURGUNDY: He is simply Staying Classy!

SOMETHING GRANDE: I Still don't know this girl. She is a pretty little thing and looks like she is having fun. Whoever she is, and I know I didn't know who she was in the previous post, she seems to be quite fashionable.

KATY PERRY: Katy back with her 50's inspired look! I love myself a bit of Perry and think she always looks good when she does herself up quite demure ( thats right I used the word demure ). I didn't realise how pale she was though. maybe its pale colour shes wearing.

ELLIE GOULDING: Oh Ellie! Why? It looks like you forgot your dress so just grabbed the nearest netting from a curtain! I don't get the whole see through lace fashion these girls seem to love. Either show it all or not at all.

LAURA WHITMORE: Or Laura "The LEGS" Whitmore!! This Girl has possibly the greatest legs I've seen ever!  Love this outfit! Shows off her legs and thats all I need to see from this beauty!

MILEY CYRUS: The Most talked about Pop star in recent history! never lets you down at an Awards event. Looking like a street hooker who got lost on the way to meeting her pimp, but what the hell, it's Miley Cyrus! I don't expect anything other than cheap and slutty from now on! You go girl! Work it!

So There you go! What did YOU Think? Let me know Below, or send me Tweet at @BarkerPODcasts

The Dinner Party - Interview with The Creators (Podcast Special)

by
How many of you out there have actually watched a "Short Film"? I mean honestly, how many of you out there have watched more than Five "Short Films" in the past Five years?

I wouldn't be surprised if most of you out there haven't sat down and watched many short films, nor have you even thought about watching them. Short Films are a medium within the film industry that is fairly difficult to showcase and get out to the audience of movie-goers.

If you search YOUTUBE you can come across some good short films whether they are Fan Made Spoofs, Amatuer Shorts or even Animated Shorts. But Short films are usually created by filmmakers as a kind of calling card to the film industry that may get them exposure and possibly work in the future. Short films, with the exception of Pixar Shorts, aren't usually shown in cinemas. Short films are showcased at Film festivals and can very easily bypass the average movie going audience.

Anyway, Recently I sat down with filmmakers Emilia Reid and Dominique Haider for a Podcast Chat about their short film "The Dinner Party" starring "Downton Abbey" Star Hugh Bonneville

Synopsis:
"One snowy evening a gentleman waits for his dinner guests to arrive. But he might be waiting some time...."

We sat down and discussed the process of their production, the conception of the idea and the advice they can give other aspiring filmmakers out there to go and make their own "Short Films".
The Podcast was extremely fun to record as not only are the two girls extremely talented and creative but also hilarious and easy going.  Take a Listen to the Podcast and see for yourself.

I asked Emilia, who has appeared in the Podcast Previously, to answer a short Q and A for this Blog also.

Me: Where did the idea come from?
Emilia: I asked Dominique to come up with a short film, only a few minutes long that had a VFX sequence in it. Literally a couple of hours later she sent me The Dinner Party

Me: How did you get Hugh involved?
Emilia: I had worked with Hugh a few times before, at the London Film Festival, then met him whilst I was working at BBC Films and then finally on Burke and Hare on which I was a runner. I sent him the script and he left me a voicemail whilst I was in the cinema (of course) saying that he loved it. I eventually worked up the courage to ask if he would do it and he said yes. He had one day free to film it because he had so many other commitments including Downton Abbey, and so that was it. We had a production date set, and we did film it in just one day

Me: What preparation did you have to do before filming?
Emilia: There wasn't much script development. Hugh added in a few of his own lines on the day. But Dominique and I sat down for hours and discussed exactly how we wanted it to look and we planned and drew up every single shot that we wanted. I went out and location scouted and then we found Keat's House which was so perfect and exactly how we had imagined it. We couldn't believe it. We also hunted for the best crew and called in a lot of favours. Everyone was so brilliant and professional, and we wouldn't have pulled it off if it weren't for them.

Me: What was the shoot like?
Emilia: Intense, but so much fun. Directing and producing at the same time, even on something this small is hard as you are in charge of every single thing. It was a long day and everyone was so hard working, so kind, so generous that we managed to get it all done. Hugh was incredibly down to earth and gracious; it was such a pleasure working with that team.

Me: What now for this short?
Emilia: We are in the process of festival submissions - it just played at the Portobello Film Festival and its in competition for the G-Technology Driven Creativity Competition. It was also in contention for The Virgin Media Shorts Competition.

Me: What advice would you give aspiring filmmakers out there?
Emilia: I'll steal the tag line from Nike and say 'Just Do It'. Don't wait for anyone's permission, don't wait for anyone else's money, get on a crowd-funding website and just go for it.
