Curiosity Killed the Ditz #15: Why are Glasses Popular?

by

Why; the three little letters that haunt my existence. From the moment I could speak I always wanted to know why. Now as an adult I am finding less and less people that want to answer my questions. I have been called nosy or weird, and angered many a person, with just those 3 letters. This is my story, quest you could call it, to try and find answers to my Whys.

WHY ARE GLASSES POPULAR?
Being a glasses wearer, I have been on both sides of the fence. I hated them when I was young and now I love them. When I was young I felt they hid my eyes and now I feel they enhance them. Styles change and fashion does play a part into if we are to find glasses attractive or not, but I feel there is more to it than that.

First lets cover the obvious... Some people look better with glasses. The added color breaks up the contours of the face and can brighten or help smaller eyes to appear larger. That being said, the sociological influences state that glasses are a sign of maturity, intelligence, and a trust worthy. Not generally considered overtly sexy traits. (Note I said not Generally, I agree all 3 can be sexy on the right person)

This social influence is being tested in modern fashion. Glasses are becoming popular even when not needed. This is very interesting. With the increase in "Geek Chic" the intelligence look is in but only when paired with something to show fun irreverence. Serious but not too serious. Does this take away the stigma to wearing glasses? I hope so and I hope this trend stays.

The best part of the social embrace of glasses is the future of them. Now there are even computer glasses that can control the internet by using your eyes. Google Glass' is taking the glasses into a whole new arena. But can glasses stay "cool"?  I don't know, I hazard to say if they are even considered "cool" now. The number of eye correction surgeries keep rising and contact lenses are are an all time high. Fashion has embrased them and so has science, but will it be enough? Does it matter?

In the words of Luci Green, Sexpert, "When people criticize my weight/hair/piercings/glasses, I remind myself that my body doesn't exist for other peoples' pleasure. It's for ME!" Words to live by.

Keep questioning.

Love,

Why You NEED to Know about "The Last Scout"

by

"The Last Scout" How Epic does that Poster Look?!
POSTER REVIEW: Great Looking Aliens Style Poster! Automaically creates a tension with simply having all the characters focusing on ONE Character whose Back is to the audience. Even The Characters are shining through by their simple poses ( I'm Looking at Rebecca Ferdinando here! She looks Fiesty already ). Great Poster!

So Recently I received a Press Release ( yes! an actual Press release! Don't be jealous! I get those now! ) about an upcoming film from the creators of "White Collar Hooligan 1 & 2".
"The Last Scout" A Paul Tanter Scripted and Simon Phillips Directed Sci-Fi Film, Starring The Podcasts own Rita Ramnani, Rebecca Ferdinando, Simon Phillips and Petra Bryant.

Being a Massive Supporter of British Film and the people who put all their heart and soul into making it work I like to try and help in any which way I can to promote and push these films out there. Good word of mouth and anticipation is key to success.
Being a Massive Paul Tanter Fan helps too. I enjoy this guys writing style, it reminds me a bit of my own writing style ( Writing? Yes I write! Well I attempt to! Go back and Read THIS and you will see how I started writing!.......Seriously Read it! ).

As well as Paul being a great Director too ( He Directed Both "White Collar Hooligan" Films ) he is solely in the writing chair for this and Simon Phillips ( Whose Directorial Debut was the Gritty "GBH" - Seriously Check that film out! Amazing! ) is on Directing Duties. Simon, to me, is one hell of a Director who seems to have taken on board his vast knowledge of the movie making business and put it in to his directing style. His previous effort "GBH" ( Again I urge you to watch! ) was an extremely gritty and dark crime thriller that pulled no punches.

Listen to The Podcast on GBH:

British Film needs YOUR help. Without people taking notice of the lower budget, Independent films then they will struggle to get out there.
Which left me curious. How do YOU usually find out about films? Do you keep up to date with Film Websites? Film magazines? TV and Radio Reviews and Adverts? Word of Mouth?

It's Interesting to know how you find out about film's you get excited about. Let me Know, I would seriously love to find out your movie anticipation outlets.

The Movie "The Last Scout" isn't due for another 12 months but knowing that these guys just finished filming in LA for this one and the fact it's a Sci-Fi film, it's going to be worth the wait. I am sure we have plenty more in the mean time to keep us entertained before then.

Please Read Below the Press Release:

“The Last Scout” wraps in LA

Runaway Features & Press On Features have wrapped on their latest feature in Los Angeles, a Sci-Fi  Thriller titled The Last Scout. Paul Tanter penned the script, with Simon Phillips taking to the directors chair.  The duo are the creative force behind the UK smash hit White Collar Hooligan and have branched into the Sci-Fi genre. The film is a futuristic story of a crew of astronauts searching for a new home for humanity after Earth has been devastated by a nuclear war between the East and the West. A four week shoot has just wrapped at Hollywood’s Laurel Canyon stages, where the company built a complete spaceship.

Tanter said: “After filming White Collar Hooligan 2 in New York last year, we’ve been keen to come back to the US to shoot and this was the perfect vehicle to do so. As Sci-Fi geeks, this is something we’re very excited about and Simon has done a terrific job both behind and in front of the camera, combining the best elements of “Sunshine” and “Battlestar Gallactica”.

The Last Scout stars Peter Woodward, Blaine Gray, Rebecca Ferdinando, Simon Phillips, Deji LaRay, Rita Ramnani, Petra Bryant and Paul Thomas Anderson

Tanter, Phillips and Alain Wildberger produce with Lyndon Baldock, Billy Murray, Rob Weston, Patrick Ewald, Shaked Berenson, Enrico Tessarin, Mirko Pincelli executive producing.

The film’s target release is May 2014.

Both Tanter and Phillips are about to commence production on New York kidnap thriller “The Disappearance of Lenka Wood” and period crime biopic “The Rise of The Krays”.

#Mashion & #Meauty No.11 - Tulisa: My View!

by

The Eleventh (#11) Post in this series of Posts where I challenge myself to try and understand the world of #BBloggers and even #FBloggers.  Click HERE to read the Previous Entries if you haven't.

Wow! Eleven Posts in and I'm still writing about Fashion and Beauty to some degree. I Didn't think I would last this long, I assumed a lot of you would give up reading and tire from my constance nonsense about a Male's Perspective. BUT it seems a lot of you out there seem to enjoy this series of blogs, so I shall attempt to keep going.

In this Post I thought I would simply discuss ONE celebrity and her different styles. The Celebrity that I shall be giving my expertise ( Ha!) is................TULISA

Fresh from being Axed from The X Factor UK, Tulisa is in real trouble of disappearing into obscurity as the prime time fan base is no longer there to see her every week for 6 months on TV.

Also Tulisa is a very peculiar celebrity to me as she seems to tread the line of being Fashionable and Normal. she always gives me the impression of somebody who is more comfortable in clothes that she picks and doesn't have to impress anybody.

Some of her fashion choices DON'T Seem to come from her. They seem to be forced upon her causing her to look uncomfortable and not what she wants to wear. If somebody looks uncomfortable in something, others pick up on it and it makes us all feel uncomfortable.
She Has her own sense of style and I am a fan of people embracing their own stamp on their style/appearance. Some people will turn their noses up at the bold choices, Some may even write a bitchy blog post about it, Some may even simply post hateful tweets to her calling her names. All that is irrelevant. She Chooses to wear clothes and have a style that represents who she is.

Tulisa is NOT your typical Celebrity. She wants to be known and respected for her music, NOT for looking good on the Red Carpet as a recent movie première. And I doubt she really wants Blog Posts about her style overshadowing her own musical merit.

So, What is the point of this blog? I don't know. I just wanted an excuse to post Photos of Tulisa, and palm it off as an actual Fashion related blog post.

Have you enjoyed it? Doesn't matter. I managed to get a half arsed post out with a girl I have a little crush on. Don't hate me for it.

Hope You are enjoying my series of Posts. Please feel free to leave me your thoughts below and even a Tweet at @BarkerPODcasts

Curiosity Killed the Ditz #14: Why Do We Giggle?

WHY DO WE GIGGLE?

I for one am a giggle fiend. I love giggling and I am really easy to get going. Also, my giggle is very funny sounding. At times I squeak and squeal as well. Guess I am a human squeeze toy. Alas, some don’t giggle as much as I do. I feel this is a shame so I wanted to find out “Why do we get the Giggles?” so I can learn how to pass them on more effectively.

Per ScienceFocus.com giggling, “…signals playtime and laughter lowers heart rate and blood pressure. Laughing with others maintains social bonding and shows everyone they’re having fun instead of being serious. That can make giggling infectious and the infection can get out of control…”.

Cool so instead of doing exercise I will just giggle a lot. It’s the new fad! Actually, the more I looked the more benefits I found. Not only does laughing and giggling lower your heart rate and blood pressure, it also boosts the immune system and reduces stress. Not only that, you can also relieve pain by laughter and potentially increase your intelligence. Per Squidoo.com, “Laughing on a regular basis can also help increase a person's memory and learning.”

Wow, I am actually really impressed. Who knew laughter was so powerful. Well, I kinda had an idea. A man that I loved dearly was dying and he taught me the power of laughter and giggles. From the moment he was diagnosed he made sure we understood that life is still fun and he is not done laughing yet. Laughter was way more beneficial to him and me during that time than any tear. Thanks Woody, the Mickey Mouse ears you were wearing in the casket looked amazing.

Sorry for the downer folks. Back to giggles! Now, how do I pass giggles on? Per Sciencestage.com, “Laughing with others maintains social bonding and shows everyone they’re having fun instead of being serious.”. Nice, so to pass on giggles, I just need to giggle more. I love it. Guess it only takes a giggle to get the giggle train a going.

Keep giggling & questioning.

Love,

DD

#Mashion & #Meauty No.10 - Fifty Shades of Bad Tan!

by

The Tenth (#10) Post in this series of Posts where I challenge myself to try and understand the world of #BBloggers and even #FBloggers.  Click HERE to read the Previous Entries if you haven't.

So, Being from Essex, there's ONE thing I always get tweets about to discuss on this Males Perspective series of Blog Posts. And that is........Drum Roll Please.........FAKE TAN!

Yes! Fake Tan! The thing that seems to epitomize what it means to be from Essex(!). Obviously this is all thanks to those BAFTA awarding winning stars of  The Only Way is Essex or TOWIE for short. And yes you didn't read that wrong, They DID win a BAFTA a few years back.

Anyway, I'm not here to slag off the show, I can't be bothered. If you like the show, you like the show. I can't be arsed to go on about it. I am here to talk about the FAKE TAN Craze.
I Really can't see what the appeal is. I get that having a decent tan can make many girls look great in a dress. Golden skin and tanned legs! Yes I can see how great they will look. But That's fine whilst out on holiday but on a freezing cold January night in the City centre, I find it strange to see ladies walking around as if they have just shared make up tips with an Oompa Loompa.

Ok, Obviously I am going on about OTT fake Tanning. A Little bronze to lighten your skin is fine, I get that, I approve that. BUT I thought I would discuss the OTT tanning, and throw up a few examples of BAD tanning.

Now surely, this whole idea of Fake tanning is to create the illusion that you've been sunning it up naturally and have a nice golden shimmer to you ( Oooh get me! Shimmer! ) but why go such a colour and have horrible make up to make you look awful?! Why? Why Didn't her friends stop her and say something?

Girl: "All done girls, how do I look?"
Friend: "Oh you look great hun, That Two Toned skin colour is so working for you!"

I Think the Lipstick makes that Photo look worse! I swear I know her!

I use to LOVE Chantelle Houghton. She was just a normal Essex girl who got lucky. Now I worry for her. She is OVER tanned, skinny and probably still has that Alex Reid Smell on her, which I wouldn't wish on anybody.

Oh Look! It's Everybody's favourite lady! Helen "I'll think after I've said something stupid" Flana...Flan....Her off I'm a Celeb. She put this Fake Tan on in the Jungle. It made great TV but I suspect she didn't intend it to be this hilarious.

One Girl I am extremely proud is embracing her Paleness, being a Pale being myself, is Nicola Roberts. She once attempted the Fake Tan route and it didn't look great.

How much better does she look natural? I say keep natural! Keep the Fake Tan down to a minimum  It's Not big and its not clever I don't think. Embrace your REAL colour Girls! And Even  Guys! Don't be tempted to change your skin tone. You are NOT Michael Jackson!

White Collar Hooligan 2: Barker Away!

by

"What Do you fancy watching?"
A common question asked in my household, as I suppose is the same in many households around the country, maybe the world. It's a Question that can spark arguments too. I know the amount of bickering arguments I have had with my other half over what film to watch, silly little arguments which usually end up with one of us getting the hump, giving in and watching something nobody is actually paying attention to.
If you think about it, That Question is a VERY hard question to answer. I mean, How many movies are there out there to watch? Millions! How many different ways can we watch them? We have DVD rentals, Streaming sites like Netflix, Catch up TV and even films you have recorded on your Sky+/V+ box. The World of choice spoils you.

So What the Hell am I talking about? Well, in usual rambling fashion, I'm trying my best to make a point that a lot of films out there need to grab your attention. They need to be recommended, advertised to you and simply put out for you to see. This can be easy with Michael Bay Blockbusters! Millions of Dollars pumped into viral marketing, Billboards, Cross Promotion, McDonalds Happy Meals! Those types of films benefit from gathering your attention.
But people forget, There are smaller budget, Independent films out there that have to graft to be heard. They have to be as creative as possible to build a great story and Cast/Crew to make a film people will take notice of. A Lot of British Films need the audience to give them a chance and try and impress with great storytelling,  great acting and the sense of passion in film making to fully connect with the audience.

Last year I stumbled across a team of Actors, Directors,Writers and Producers who were working hard to create some great British Films with the tools they had. The Main film I came across was "The Rise and Fall of a White Collar Hooligan". A British Crime Thriller about a Football Hooligan who get's caught up with Credit Card fraud and falls in too deep.
(You can Watch this film on NETFLIX)
The Film was a great British film Written and Directed by Paul Tanter. I spoke to Paul about the film for a special Podcast Episode as well as chatting to Actresses Rebecca Ferdinando and Rita Ramnani, who has become part of the Podcasting Collection.
(You can Hear the PODCAST here)

Over the course of the year, I kept in touch with all them via email and twitter and kept up with the productions of their films.
GBH: Directed by Simon Phillips and starring Nick Nevern was another fantastic Gritty Thriller set around the London Riots
(Listen to the PODCAST here)
Fall of The Essex Boys: Directed by Paul Tanter tells a version of The Infamous Range Rover Murders.
(Watch the VIDEO PODCAST here)
(Listen to the PODCAST chat here - Chat is 16 minutes into the show)

I managed to get Rita more involved with the Podcast and to my astonishment she took to it like a duck to water. Recording several segments, Promos and NOW she can be heard EVERY episode as the Voice of The ODDcast PODcast UK.

Listen to The Rita Ramnani PROMO for The ODDcast PODcast UK

Keeping in touch with these people, allowed me to keep up to date with their projects and create a buzz about them.
I am a massive film fan and I respect anybody who goes out and is creative. Creating a Film is a tough task and anybody who goes at it full throttle deserves my respect for sure. I am also a massive fan of British Films, which I think every British person should be #SupportBritishFilm, so watching these types of films wasn't a hard ask.

So.....Bringing you up to date! Last Night Myself and Fellow Podcaster Billy were invited to a screening of PART 2 of White Collar Hooligan! We set out to London "All the Way from Essex!" as Rita put it, and met up with the Hooligan team ( They aren't actually Hooligans, I'm just referring to them as Hooligans because of the film.........Shut up it works OK! ). But being early we even managed to sit down before the screening with Actress Rebecca Ferdinando who filled the 20 minutes waiting time with her life story. I Love Rebecca and she was so animated in telling me stories of her work that at one point she even managed to grab my arm and nearly give myself a Bruise ( I'm no wuss! Rebecca is strong! She works out, Don't underestimate her ). After a quick drink, we headed back to the Screening and met the Hooligans ( Shut up, I'm sticking with that ).
Chatting to Actor Nick Nevern, who is possibly the coolest guy you'll ever meet. Director Paul Tanter who even with severe Jet Lag was pleased to see me, even if he probably couldn't see me due to the Jet Lag making his eyes drop. And Friend of The Podcast Rita Ramnani, which was great to have an actual face to face chat with other than the several Skype sessions we usually have for the Podcast.

So We all settled in the Screening room with lots of other people to watch PART 2 of The White Collar Hooligan Series..........

Click Here to listen to The Podcast recorded specially for The Movie: ODDcast PODcast Ep92

Short Synopsis: Mike Jacobs is hiding out in Spain with Girlfriend Katie when People who are after him find them, Kidnap Katie and give him 4 days to get £2 Million Pounds or else. This Sets Mike on a race against time to save Katie and he stumbles across Old friend Eddie in the meantime.

NOW, I Won't spoil the Film for anybody out there. In Fact I won't discuss too much about, because If You haven't seen the First one, I Fully recommend you going out and getting BOTH of the films and having a double header. All I will say is The film is BIGGER and BETTER than the First one! A Great Step up like all sequels should be. Having the action set across London to Spain to New York it was fast paced and edge of your seat.
The On Screen Chemistry between Nick Nevern (Mike) and Simon Phillips (Eddie) was Fantastic. Both Actors teamed up perfectly like a Modern day Butch Cassidy/Sundance Kid. Rita Ramnani (Katie) had a bigger role this time round and didn't disappoint. Even though she was playing the Damsel in distress role, she had more of a bite about her. Tom Benedict Knight (Proshinko) A brand new character who played the Bad Guy role great. Playing the Big Boss with menace and intensity.
Great Direction from Paul Tanter. Some Great shots there and with Cinematographer Haider Zafer back on board it was still the same quality I expected. The script was tight, fun and well paced. Not Overly complicated, nor did it need to be. Some great little twists and great suprises in there. In Fact there is even a "Homage" ( Not my words, But the Words of Paul Tanter ) to.......ME! Yes that's right! There is a little homage to my good self put in there thanks to Writer and Director Paul Tanter. It's Not a spoiler, it's pretty much Mike's name under the witness protection is "Mike BARKER" ! How cool is that?! Honoured to hear my Second Name used in the film. ( Some times its the simple things in life that impress me )

So The Film was a Triumph in my opinion. The team of Hooligans ( Ok, it does sound a bit stupid, I'll stop now ) worked hard and created a great film. I fully recommend this film. If I hadn't taken a chance to watch lower budget indie films I may never have seen the passion, effort and hard work that goes in to these films.

Verdict: BIGGER, BETTER and BOLDER! Great Film, Really Enjoyed it.

So Go Check out "White Collar Hooligan 2" Follow the Cast and Crew on Twitter and Get involved and start Supporting British Film.

So, Finally after the Screening we headed back to a Hotel Bar in SoHo where we had a few drinks and a chat about the film and other things. Was Great having a good chat with Rita. She is like a Sister to me the way she is, a genuine person who is a laugh to be around.

ALSO a special shout out to Miss GiGi who appeared in the Film and even in Supar Nova's Music Video. We had a great chat with her and her Brother Simon. GiGi or @GiGipetite1 on Twitter was hilarious to talk to and really wants to get in on the podcast! And I promise you, when we get her on, YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED! This girl is GOLD!.

Have you seen it? what did you think? Let me know.

Uncle Arthurs Blog-ocks: #6 -Backstage With The Uncle Arthur Band

by

Uncle Arthur’s Bollocks is a podcast hosted by Lancastrian, Nigel Boydell. The show’s format revolves around Arthur’s opinionated ramblings about whatever has irked him that week. Although Arthur comes across as a foul mouthed old lout who appears to want everyone fired out of a cannon, he is, in fact, a foul mouthed old lout who wants everyone fired out of a cannon
