Curiosity Killed the Ditz #15: Why are Glasses Popular?

Another Curious "WHY" from @DitzwitDtits . This time she asks about Glasses and their popularity! Why?

Why; the three little letters that haunt my existence. From the moment I could speak I always wanted to know why. Now as an adult I am finding less and less people that want to answer my questions. I have been called nosy or weird, and angered many a person, with just those 3 letters. This is my story, quest you could call it, to try and find answers to my Whys.

WHY ARE GLASSES POPULAR?
Being a glasses wearer, I have been on both sides of the fence. I hated them when I was young and now I love them. When I was young I felt they hid my eyes and now I feel they enhance them. Styles change and fashion does play a part into if we are to find glasses attractive or not, but I feel there is more to it than that.

First lets cover the obvious... Some people look better with glasses. The added color breaks up the contours of the face and can brighten or help smaller eyes to appear larger. That being said, the sociological influences state that glasses are a sign of maturity, intelligence, and a trust worthy. Not generally considered overtly sexy traits. (Note I said not Generally, I agree all 3 can be sexy on the right person)

This social influence is being tested in modern fashion. Glasses are becoming popular even when not needed. This is very interesting. With the increase in "Geek Chic" the intelligence look is in but only when paired with something to show fun irreverence. Serious but not too serious. Does this take away the stigma to wearing glasses? I hope so and I hope this trend stays.

The best part of the social embrace of glasses is the future of them. Now there are even computer glasses that can control the internet by using your eyes. Google Glass' is taking the glasses into a whole new arena. But can glasses stay "cool"?  I don't know, I hazard to say if they are even considered "cool" now. The number of eye correction surgeries keep rising and contact lenses are are an all time high. Fashion has embrased them and so has science, but will it be enough? Does it matter?

In the words of Luci Green, Sexpert, "When people criticize my weight/hair/piercings/glasses, I remind myself that my body doesn't exist for other peoples' pleasure. It's for ME!" Words to live by.

Keep questioning.

Love,

  1. If I can rely on what people tell me, then it's that you look smarter and more sophisticated with glasses. People take me more seriously when I wear mine (which is not often, I prefer lenses).
And I have to be honest, I like glasses on people more too. It makes the face more symmetric and I think that's why people like glasses. We're programmed to like symmetric faces.
Nevertheless, I'm glad glasses are in style. I love wearing mine every now and then :)

  2. I've worn glasses since I was a child & I went through the comments, name calling & the whole bit. I used to hate wearing glasses. Now that I'm older, I like how I look in them.
I've always been picky about the glasses I wear, mostly thinking about how I think I look in them, focusing on how they compliment/accent my face. That helps my confidence, and as you know, confidence is sexy.
