E3 2015: Virtual Reality is almost here with Oculus Rift and Sony's Morpheus | #NOTplaying #83

by

It all seems so long ago now, but this year's E3 was truly a blinder. So much went down in LA a couple of weeks ago that it's all we'll be talking about for the next few shows. In this first part, we'll be discussing the presence of VR at the show and indeed just before it at Oculus's own event, where they unveiled the first consumer version of the Oculus Rift, the new Oculus Touch Controllers and that surprise 'relationship' with Microsoft. We also talk about Project Morpheus and some of the games unveiled for the Sony device. It's getting close now. VR is almost here :)

Final retail Oculus Rift reveal

Oculus Touch 'Halfmoon' Controllers - wireless, recognise hand gestures

E3 2015: The Highlights

by

I love E3. Every year it resets my gaming calendar and gives me an idea of what at least 50% of my disposable down-time is going to look like for the next 12 months. Of course, I've never actually been to E3. That would be madness, as was clearly demonstrated by Polygon this year, who conducted all of their video interviews via Skype. Seriously, in these days of HD video streaming, why be there in person to see lots of things on screens when you can sit at home and watch them on a screen of your own? Sure, you might not be able to walk around and play pre-release versions of upcoming games, but I'm a bit shy when it comes to Early Access anyway, so I don't feel at any disadvantage watching all the coverage on Youtube.

And what a lot of coverage there was - with an additional three major conferences on top of the usual five making it even more difficult for games without a major presence at those presentations to make any kind of splash at all - hell, I had to manually google 'XCOM 2' to see any coverage of that game and the more I delved the more unknowns I would uncover.... VR Demos, Platform exclusive Indie games... you name it, there was more of it...

So bearing in mind how I absorbed much of the coverage, here are my top 10 games of the show and why...

Horizon Zero Dawn (Guerilla/Sony - PS4)

This wasn't just one of many surprises at Sony's conference, it was also a brand new IP with an inspiring post post apocalyptic setting that brought the recent I am Legend movie and Ninja Theory's Enslaved to mind. Lush vegetation, Massive Dinobot adversaries and a female protagonist. An utterly refreshing show.

Doom (Id/Bethesda - PC/PS4/XBox One)

I never really got on with Doom 3. It looked fantastic at the time, but I found the survival horror stylings unnecessary and the endless monster closets tiresome. It was with great surprise then that I was impressed with this latest reinvention of the series. The action seemed smooth and solid, with a great number of gory melee takedowns to punctuate the gunplay. Easily one of the prettiest games of the show, in a sort of disturbingly brutal way.

No Man's Sky (Hello Games - PC/PS4)

The live conference demo of this game was brilliant, with Sean Murray setting off across the game's massive universe and landing on a planet he had never been to before in an attempt to demonstrate how massive and procedural their game is. I think he succeeded. It also looks like the game has come along a fair way since we saw it at E3 last year: it's looking like more of an actual videogame now and I can't wait to try it. Also confirmed to be out for PC at the same time as PS4, though they were reluctant to announce the actual date. I'm guessing late 2016...

Kingdom Come: Deliverance (Warhorse - PC/PS4/Xbox One)

This crowd-funded magic-less medieval RPG is looking no less magical as it approaches it's tentative summer 2016 release date. Super realistic motion-captured graphics, compellingly dynamic RPG design and a comprehensive melee fighting system should allow this game to stand-out from the indie crowd when it finally exits beta next year...

Mad Max (Avalanche/Warner Bros. - PC/PS4/Xbox One)

The timing of Avalanche's long-in-development Mad Max game is nothing short of fortuitous given the reception of George Miller's recent cinematic reboot of the franchise, Fury Road, for this is certainly no cynical merchandiing opportunity. George Miller was directly involved in it's conception and it definitely shows. I had hoped that the vehicles would take centre stage to distinguish this from other open-world games and indeed it seems as though the construction and customisation of the player's vehicle will not only form the backbone of the game design, but also inform many of the RPG-like choices along the way. Vehicular slaughter, Warboys, Sand. Mad Max is shaping up to be the full package.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (Eidos Montreal/Square Enix - PC/PS4/Xbox One)

The original Deus Ex is one of my favourite videogames of all time, so I don't exactly need the hard sell when it comes to this series. In fact, I actively shied away from watching the 20+ minute long gameplay demo above. After 2011's Human Revolution I have absolute faith in Eidos Montreal to deliver a worthy (and possibly less golden) follow-up to one of the best games of the previous console generation. At the very least, the new 'DAWN' engine powering it looks like a significant step-up for the next/current gen installment.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (Naughty Dog/Sony - PS4)

Another franchise that I'm particularly enamored with and a game that will ultimately sell me a PS4 by the time it's released next year. The E3 demo was especially impressive, showcasing a huge environment that puts some open-world games to shame, while delivering the kind of tight orchestrated scenario we've come to expect from Naughty Dog. With the writer of the first two games back on board, this is sure to be another great Uncharted game.

XCOM 2 (Firaxis/2K - PC)

Firaxis decision to focus on the PC version didn't help XCOM 2's profile at E3 - it was in fact so notable by it's absence that I had to trawl through Gamespot's video coverage to find anything on the game at all! It is one I'm especially looking forward to though - Enemy Within was my game of 2012 and I love how the setup for the sequel is predicated on the vast majority of it's fan's inability to complete the game on Ironman mode!

The Last Guardian (Team Ico/Sony - PS4)

Maybe dreams do come true, maybe Half Life 3 will come out one day and pigs might fly, these are all things that could be said in the context of Sony's big show opener, The Last Guardian, which many had consigned to the hell-pit of vaporware after it's many years of absense from E3. Rumours were also circulating that the project was now in the hands of PS4 designer, Mark Cerny, but this turned out only to be partly true. Original creator, Fumito Ueda was still very much on board and the the lengthy development time was further extended by the shift in architecture between PS3 and PS4. Luckily, it's pedigree seems to have remained intact and the game will finally see the light of day in 2016! Let's not hold our breath though!

Fallout 4 (Bethesda - PC/PS4/Xbox One)

Arguably the most anticipated game of the show, with a reveal that both spearheaded and justfied Bethesda's own E3 showcase. Fallout 4 had quite the unveiling, with demonstrations of the game's newly voiced protagonist, an unsurprisingly innovative take on character creation and a wealth of crafting opportunities. Also, for a game (at least mostly) set in a post apocalyptic wasteland, it seems really colourful! And in the biggest mic-drop moment of E3, Todd Howard announced the release date of Fallout 4 to be 10/11/15. Game over.

Supporting the #NOTlistening World

by
#NOTbegging........Just Support

What can I offer YOU the patreon? Well, seeing as The #NOTlistening Website offers FREE podcasting, videos and blogs it does seem like you are not getting much for pledging......well that isn't true.
By pledging and supporting the #NOTlistening website YOU are keeping the creativity and entertaining content going. By the sheer thought of others out there getting behind us, it makes it all seem like we are stepping it up and opening up more doors to creative content.

By getting some backing from the readers and listeners, it will enable us to (over time) upgrade our podcasting and video equipment, sustain a self hosting website and domain name, being able to cover costs of challenges and exciting activities for the #NOTlistening website.

The whole money aspect works on a monthly basis where you can set up a direct payment. for example if you pledge just $1 a month, that equates to no more than 70p UK sterling a month. That's almost nothing in terms of noticing leaving your bank account right? (Sounds a bit like the scheme from Superman 3 or Office Space right?!.......but it's not a scheme)
There are also rewards and perks we will be offering from invitations to Hangout with us online, have episodes dedicated to you, have you as a sponsor of the show and much much more.
Obviously if we can gather a load of people to support this way it would make it worthwhile. Either way, I am looking for support.

I am hoping, with some backing, we can explore more
- #NOTlistening Podcasts. Get in more Celebrity Interviews and do more LIVE shows, including a possible LIVE STAGE SHOW.

- #NOTlistening Videos. Get the You Tube channel more active. Upgrading equipment or even getting better imaging and logo/branding professionally done. This would include more Vlogs, Challenges, Tags and even re-invigorating the #Mashion channel.

- #NOTlistening Blogs. Blogging is a key part of what we do at #NOTlistening. This would cover the main website posts as well as making #Mashion and the Lifestyle blog "NOT got anything nice to say" Blog more focused and adding more content.

Again, this doesn't all revolve around money. I am not here to tell you to give me money so I can do these things, I am trying to create a BUZZ and support network that gives YOU an opportunity to get behind. If you choose NOT to give money, BUT do want to spread the word and support, then that is still a good decision in my book.

So, Please, take a look at the website, listen to some podcasts and see if you think this is something you wouldn't mind supporting.

Much Love
Adam

by

With Season 5 of HBO's epic fantasy drama having concluded this week, we thought it would be a good time to discuss it in detail. Please note that this show was recorded just after episode 8: Hardhome aired, so you'll have to wait for a future show before we get into the shocking death of [SPOILER], the timely return of [SPOILER], that truly epic [SPOILER] of [SPOILER] and our thoughts on what might occur in season 6. Do you believe in Hyp-NO-sis? | #NOTlistening

by
Hyp-NO-sis!

In | #NOTlistening Podcast Ep.176 - HypNOsis | we have a little discussion on "hypnosis" and the way it is used as entertainment for TV shows. Recently there was a TV show where contestants had to try and win things whilst being under hypnosis. Was it real? Fuck knows. Was it entertaining? Was it fuck?!
I'm not saying people can't be put under a certain type of hypnosis, I do believe in the power of persuasion and manipulation, but I don't believe in all that
"I'll click my fingers and you will be a cat" or "After the count of three every time you hear this music, you'll think you are Patrick Swayze"........What a load of bollocks.

Take a Listen to the Episode and let me know what you think of Hypnosis.

A Chat with British Film Producer Jonathan Sothcott

by
What Does a Producer Do?

I was lucky enough to have a chat with British Film Producer Jonathan Sothcott.
Who is Jonathan Sothcott?......
Jonathan Sothcott could soon be Britain’s Harvey Weinstein as he is about to about to open his own studio, Peacock Film Studios, acting as producer. His impressive filmography boasts more than twenty films including Vendetta, White Collar Hooligan, We Still Kill the Old Way and many more. His films have gained quite a following, so fans will be pleased to know along with Age of Kill, two more features are set to follow, Bonded by Blood II and the sequel to We Still Kill the Old Way: We Steal the Old Way.
Sothcott, who champions British actors through his film company Richwater Films, has been noted as far as Los Angeles with prestigious film magazine The Hollywood Reporter stating “Jonathan Sothcott is carving out a niche as one of the most prolific producers of British Action Movies”. His latest feature, Age of Kill is about to premiere.
Age of Kill boasts a cast of familiar faces including Donna Air, Martin Kemp, Dexter Fletcher, April Pearson, Philip Davies, Patrick Bergin and Nick Moran. In this riveting, fast-paced thriller a black ops sniper is blackmailed by a psychotic international terrorist killing 6 unrelated people in 6 hours, but there is more to the victims than meets the eye.
With the opening of Peacock Film Studios – London - it is safe to say we can expect many more exciting films from this talented producer.
I was able to ask Jonathan a few questions about being a producer, working with some great british talent and even pitch a few film ideas to him.

Hello Jonathan. Thanks for talking to me. I've actually been aware of your work for a few years now and you have a pretty impressive producer’s filmography. Can you tell me what exactly a producer does?

It all depends on the producer to be honest. And then there are all the various associate producers, co-producers, line producers and executive producers. I have a producing partner, Neil Jones, who is a nuts and bolts producer – budgets, schedules, all the complex (and boring) stuff that goes into physically making movies. I am all about finding the projects, attaching the talent, raising the money and then selling the movies. It’s a dream partnership really because Neil does all the work and I take all the credit. Seriously though I’d be lost without Jonesy. Some years ago I made a truly dismal comedy about the film industry in which Danny Dyer played this rather louche producer, which he based on me. The last shot of the movie has Rik Mayall asking him what exactly an Executive Producer does… Dyer is in bed, post coital, with Shameless actress Alice Barry who pipes up “everything except anal.” I’m not sure how true that is but it still makes me chuckle.

When you get a script and want to make a film, what is the decision process whilst trying to find the right director, actor, crew etc and once they are on board how does your input into the filmmaking process change?

Rarely is a scenario the same from film to film – I have a pool of writers and directors and they all pitch ideas to me, sometimes together, sometimes individually. Sometimes a script comes in out of the blue and is brilliant, sometimes a distributor will give me an idea (which was the case on We Still Kill The Old Way) or sometimes I’ll read a book and option it. I try and let the creative get on with their jobs as much as possible – if you hire good people they only need gentle management. Working with someone like Sacha Bennett, who’s just wrapped his second film for me is a dream – we have a great producer/director rapport and haven’t had a cross word across two pictures… you can’t ask for much more!

You've worked with some great British talent, from Danny Dyer to Nick Nevern to Rita Ramnani and Craig Fairbrass. Do you look at the pool of actors in the UK film industry and feel happy to have them on board?

I’ve had a lot of fun working with Danny, Craig, Nick and Rita over the years. One of the great things about being a producer is that you get to work with actors you admire – Return of the Jedi was one of the first films I saw and I did a picture with Mark Hamill for example. Anyone who has seen my movies will know that I have this rep company of great British actors – Billy Murray, Martin Kemp, Vincent Regan, Jason Fleymng, Phil Davis, Patrick Bergin etc. But its fun working with emerging talent too – I gave Danny-Boy Hatchard (Lee Carter in Eastenders) his first film role in We Still Kill The Old Way and he was fantastic. More recently I cast Casey Batchelor in Bonded By Blood 2. I’ll be honest, there was cynicism from some of my colleagues – shouldn’t we get a more experienced actress etc? But she was drama school trained and you know what? They’ve all come back to me since and said how great she was.

Tell me more about Peacock Film Studios. What should we expect from it?

I used to make a lot of pictures at Wimbledon Studios until it went bust last year and was kind of relying on it. So I have been looking for a replacement. Billy Murray and I were in Canning Town meeting a writer at the Peacock Gym, who kindly let me use their boardroom when I’m in East London. The owner of the Peacock said I should come and look at some space he had, maybe we could film in it… and it was basically a bloody readymade film studio. We’ve been tarting it up and it will be ready to open soon. It has been Billy’s baby really, he has totally project managed it and been hands on in the redevelopment – we’ve had a succession of builders and contractors looking bemused at the sight of Johnny Allen on the roof in a hardhat doing a bit of casual welding. The man’s a legend.

What upcoming movies should we be looking out for?

Well I’m looking forward to the new Star Wars… oh, I see what you mean. My latest one is Age of Kill which is out this month. It’s an action movie starring Martin Kemp, Phil Davis and Nick Moran. It’s unusual for a Brit indie in that there’s no football hooligans, no range rover murders – no gangsters in fact. It’s an action/spy movie. So hopefully people will appreciate that it’s something a bit different. And Martin is bloody magnificent in it.

Ok here's a fun scenario.
Right, I'm a film writer and I want to pitch to you three films. Give me your honest producers critique on them and give them a title:

A couple living on a council estate in London find a car abandoned near their flat. Inside in loads of drugs and money. They take it all and try to live a high life, until a gang return to retrieve their goods. It all ends up with a stand-off between the couple and the gang. Think die-hard meets benefits street.

I actually quite like this. I’d go with either Money For Nothing, Wages Of Sin or Stolen.

A group of three girls seek revenge on a pimp that abused them for years. They embark on a road journey to track him down, but along the way one of the girls is hiding a secret.

Depends on the secret. Is she a man? Or his sister? Female action is hard to sell because it so easily turns into exploitation movie territory. Which is a shame as I have a great female-centric action movie which I think could be every bit as good as Vendetta. I’d call this Payback. I know it has been used before but it does what it says on the tin.

A chubby little blogger finds out he is actually a Superhero with the power to bore people enough until they fall asleep. He lives alone....because every one is asleep. It's a solo one take movie.

I think this geezer wrote a couple of movies for me as it goes. The Seventh Sense?

I think you’d be surprised about how close to what I get pitched these are. I get a lot of vigilante taxi driver pitches too. Mostly from taxi drivers who want to be vigilantes.

Thank you very much for your time, Jonathan.

Talking "Zombeavers" with Actress Cortney Palm

by
Dam Those Beavers

Recently I discovered a film that really caught my eye. The film is called "Zombeavers" and it's a instant "Cult Classic". I was lucky enough to grab an interview with the star of the movie CORTNEY PALM (@cortneypalm5) and have a little chat about the film and her a little bit about herself.

Mad Max: Fury Road, It Follows & more... | #NOTwatching #52

by

It's been out a few weeks now, but George Miller's return to the post apocalyptic wasteland is still riding high in the Box Office charts. Why? Because it's pretty much what cinema was invented for? Probably. Because it's redefines the entire action movie genre? Almost certainly. Because it's a visual feast of a movie that will have you grinning like a idiot for it's entire duration? Easily. Suffice it to say we kinda liked this movie a bit. OK, maybe a lot. Like the film itself however, it's not all about Mad Max. We also have time to delve into the masterful horror of It Follows, the Keanu Reeves action-comeback of John Wick & Alex Garland's ingenious directorial debut, Ex Machina. It's all about the movies on this week's #NOTwatching Podcast!

Just a Scottish Elvis | #NOTlistening

by
Just a Scottish Elvis

Recording the #NOTlistening Podcast is a right laugh. We sit down and discuss our thoughts on all things Pop Culture, Film and TV, Celebrity-wise and even Science.....BUT some weeks we just want to let loose and record some things that are purely "creative" and almost just for our own enjoyment.

In | #NOTlistening Ep.174- Just a Scottish Elvis | we decided to unleash an interview myself and Ash recorded with Elvis Presley.......from Scotland.

The entire interview was a farce and I (Adam) couldn't keep it together for much of it, and I wonder if ANY of you can her the clever little edit during the podcast. If you can spot the edit, let me know and I'll know how decent my editing skills are.
We had a lot of fun recording this, and it just proved to be a lot of fun to do. Sometimes having a few drinks and thinking up silly ideas can pay off.

Check it out. A NSFW (Not safe for Work) Podcast that will keep you entertained during your commute, work day, time alone on the toilet.
